World Water Day: a commitment to the oceans
World Water Day takes on a different meaning on a world voyage. Water stops being simply a natural element and becomes a constant, quiet, essential presence. Onboard Vasco da Gama, every nautical mile reinforces the bond between people and the ocean, and reminds us, every day, why responsible navigation matters.
A global voyage guided by the ocean
Vasco da Gama’s World Voyage spans 175 days, from 7 November 2025 to 1 May 2026, across 11 routes. Alternatively, the World Voyage Compact, with 112 days, ran until 27 February 2026, offering a similarly striking selection of itineraries.
Whatever the duration, one element remains the same: the ocean as a continuous presence. It connects distant geographies, brings cultures closer, and offers a unique perspective on the scale, and fragility, of our planet.
Navigating responsibly: practical solutions onboard
Environmental responsibility is not built on intentions; it is built on systems and operational discipline. Onboard, that approach translates into measures designed to protect the marine environment and manage water with rigour.
Advanced wastewater treatment
An advanced treatment system delivers clarified water with bathing-water quality, meeting demanding standards and helping ensure operations minimise impact on the ocean.
SCR technology on the engines
The ship’s five engines are equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), capable of reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx) by up to 95%, supporting cleaner navigation.
Silicone-based underwater hull coating
The silicone-based underwater coating is described as durable and robust, does not release toxic substances into the sea, and contributes to fuel-consumption reduction of around 6%.
Water as a resource, responsibility and awareness
On a voyage of this scale, water is not only what surrounds the ship, it is a resource that demands careful management, innovation and continuous respect. World Water Day becomes, therefore, a natural moment for reflection, precisely because the ocean is present on every horizon.
Across each route, Vasco da Gama does not simply cross oceans, it reminds us of their importance. Because one truth becomes clearer at sea: we have only one planet, and if it is through the ocean that we discover it, it is also through the ocean that we must protect it.
